Wicklow GAA has apologised to supporters after last Sunday’s Allianz Football League Division 4 clash with Waterford was postponed at the 11th hour.
A decision to postpone the game was made after the pitch in Aughrim was declared unplayable less than three hours before the 2pm throw-in. This came after an earlier inspection at 9am deemed the pitch playable.
“The pitch was inspected at 9am and deemed playable, despite the windy and rainy conditions,” a Wicklow GAA statement to the local media read.
“However, over the subsequent 90 minutes, the weather worsened significantly, with heavy rain and increasing wind speeds further deteriorating the pitch. A second inspection by an inter-county referee was conducted, and it became evident that the game could not proceed safely.
“Efforts were immediately made to identify an alternative venue, but unfortunately, all suitable locations in the region were facing similar weather-related issues. Throughout this process, Wicklow GAA’s Secretary maintained regular communication with the Waterford GAA Secretary to explore options and keep them informed of developments.
“Despite our best efforts, the conditions were beyond our control, and the safety of players, officials, and supporters remained our top priority. A follow-up email to the Waterford Secretary was then made to ensure the safe return of all involved, including travelling supporters, and offering apologies for all inconvenience caused on the day.”
