SFC Group D: Bracks lose out in Trim

August 28, 2023

Ballinabrackey's Dean McNamee with Sean Penny Wolfe Tones during the Meath SFC clash at Trim

Ballinabrackey 1-8 Wolfe Tones 2-8

Both teams went into this game with everything to play for in the final round but it was Wolfe Tones who left Trim the happier side on Sunday evening.

They got the first touch of the ball and made no mistakes in using this as they kicked the first score 19 seconds in. Quickly followed by a point from a free. Sean Coffey kicked the first score for the Bracks with a point from a free but Wolfe Tones controlled the next 10 minutes with two more scores and holding on to possession. The 15th minute the ball moved well for the Bracks and Mark Coffey broke through defence to land the ball in the back of the Tones net giving Ballinabrackey a much needed lift. This didn’t panic the other side and they regained control of the game with a point from play followed by two goals back to back by Tom Gavigan and Fiachra Ward. The Bracks got two frees kicked over by Danny Quinn but Wolfe Tones Dan O’Neill who caused considerable damage in this game kicked another point from play just before half time leaving the half time score as Ballinabrackey 1:03 Wolfe Tones 2:06.

After a tough first half Ballinabrackey found their feet in the second half and Danny Quinn slotted over another point from an advanced mark. Thomas O’Reilly was in form for Wolfe Tones and kicked a lovely point from play. Again, the Bracks struggled against the possession of the ball by Wolfe Tones and found it difficult to find the break to get through but Danny Quinn confident in his kicking abilities kicked another free over the bar. The final 15 is where the Bracks came into their own but a number of wides from both sides meant big chances were missed to move ahead for the Bracks at a crucial time. Two more points from frees for Danny Quinn and a point from play for David Carroll left only 3 points in it but time ran out for the Bracks and Wolfe Tones ended this game as the winners who advance to the knockout stages of championship and Ballinabrackey face relegation.
