Kenny Park in Athenry is set to close its gates tomorrow (Monday) for the rest of the year as it undergoes significant drainage works.

The Galway venue will be out of action until 2024 as a result and, once the works are completed, it is hoped that it will be able to stage games both earlier and later in the year.

With its central location in the county, many consider Kenny Park to be the home of Galway hurling and has been used as the Tribesmen’s de facto home ground for decades and, as recently as three years ago, it played host to the county’s senior hurling championship final.

The work on the venue is set to see a number of drainage channels installed under the surface and could take up to a year to be fully completed.
