Rising Offaly hurling star Donal Shirley is facing a spell on the sidelines after breaking his wrist in a football match last weekend.
The 2024 All-Ireland U20 winner, who established himself at centre back as Offaly gained promotion to the top-flight of the Allianz League and also retained their Liam MacCarthy Cup status this year, sustained the injury in the 51st minute of Tubber’s SFC ‘B’ 0-10 to 1-10 defeat to Cappincur on Friday evening. Tubber were leading by two points at the time, but ended up losing after a fortuitous goal from former county midfielder Eoin Carroll was followed by the game’s only two-pointer from the same player.
Shirley, who was replaced by the evergreen Ciaran McManus, is now in danger of missing the remainder of Tubber’s championship campaign, while he will also be a huge loss to his hurling club Brosna Gaels.
