On what was a sensational weekend in the Westmeath SFC, holders and last year’s Leinster finalists The Downs were knocked out, while the once-mighty Garrycastle were relegated to the intermediate ranks for 2024.

Leading by 0-12 to 0-8 with 15 minutes to go at Rochfortbridge last evening, The Downs were overhauled in the closing stages by Tyrrellspass who edged a 1-12 to 0-14 victory. It means that Lar Wall’s charges are out ahead of the last round of the group series. Earlier in Athlone, 2012 All-Ireland club finalists Garrycastle were demoted following a 2-10 to 1-12 defeat to surprise packets Tang, who are heading for the knockout stages with four wins from four.

There was another shock at TEG Cusack Park last evening when Killucan ended Coralstown/Kinnegad’s unbeaten run with a 0-9 to 0-7 victory. Meanwhile, St Loman’s showed why they are favourites to regain the Flanagan Cup when they hammered Shane Curran’s Caulry on a 2-20 to 0-10 scoreline, while on Friday evening in Kinnegad, a last-gasp Sean Dowd goal handed Athlone a dramatic 1-8 to 0-9 win over Mullingar Shamrocks.
