The Westmeath SFC opened with a bang last weekend.

In the big game in Section A, St Loman’s gained a measure of revenge for last year’s county final defeat to The Downs with a 4-13 to 2-13 victory at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday evening. Despite lining out without star forwards John Heslin and Shane Dempsey, Paddy Dowdall’s charges still racked up a big score with Ronan O’Toole bagging 1-6, Danny McCartan 1-3 and Sam McCartan and TJ Cox 1-2 each.

Goals from Shane Fleming (two), Brían Cooney and Dan Leech propelled recently-crowned Division 1 League champions Coralstown/Kinnegad to a 4-6 to 0-10 win over Kevin Maguire’s Caulry, while Tyrrellspass accounted for Killucan by 0-12 to 0-9.

There were three big shocks in the weaker Section B. Jack Keenan and Shane Coughlan both found the net for Tang in a 2-9 to 1-11 victory over the once-mighty Mullingar Shamrocks, newly-promoted Shandonagh also had a point to spare over Garrycastle (0-15 to 1-11), while Moate All-Whites beat Athlone 1-9 to 0-7 to claim the local bragging rights.
