Galway held off a late fightback from Tipperary this evening to advance to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland senior hurling championship.
It finished 1-20 to 1-18 at the TUS Gaelic Grounds, where Conor Whelan’s goal right at the start of the second-half helped propel Henry Shefflin’s charges to victory.
The Tribesmen had led deservedly by 0-10 to 0-7 at the half and, after the resumption, Whelan made the most of a Tipp mix up at the back to fire low past ‘keeper Rhys Shelly.
Shelly had some terrific saves on the evening to keep the Premier men in the contest and they were right back in the hunt when substitute John McGrath’s 62nd minute goal had them trailing by one (1-16 to 1-15).
The Leinster finalists steadied their ship though with three points from Tom Monaghan off the bench that helped secure their semi-final date against Limerick at Croke Park in two weeks’ time.
After their comfortable win over Dublin earlier today, Brian Lohan’s Clare side will take on Kilkenny in the other semi-final at headquarters on July 9th.
