Offaly's Dara Maher is tackled by Niall Murphy and Sean O'Connor of Wexford

Dara Maher is set to miss Offaly’s All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final against Tipperary next Saturday after his appeal against the red card he received during the Joe McDonagh Cup final was upheld by the CHC (Central Hearings Committee).

The Shinrone defender was controversially issued with a straight red card by referee Thomas Walsh for interfering with the helmet of a Carlow opponent in the 31st minute of the Croke Park encounter. A penalty was also awarded which Marty Kavanagh duly fired to the net.

Despite being down to 14 players for the rest of normal time, Offaly took the game to extra-time where they were restored to 15 players, but lost in agonising circumstances.

Believing that the dismissal was harsh, Maher appealed the decision to the CHC last Thursday night. However, the CHC found that he was in breach of Rule 7.2 (b) Category 3 offence, which is “behaving in any way which is dangerous to an opponent”.

It means that Maher’s one-match suspension is upheld, though he does have the option of taking his case further to the Central Appeals Committee.
