A former Dublin minor hurler will skipper the Ireland U20 rugby team in their Six Nations opener against England in Cork tonight.
David Hawkshaw won a Leinster MHC medal with the Dubs in 2016 before deciding to concentrate on rugby after securing a place in the Leinster Academy. He excelled in the colours of St Brigid's from an early age, but the lure of playing sport professionally was too good to turn down.
"I would have thought of that (making a living) in making the decision," Hawkshaw said in a recent interview with the Irish Independent.
"It was hard to let go of the hurling as well, but at the end of the day the decision had to made. I played a bit with St Brigid's and was lucky enough to be selected with the Dublin minors as well. I have stopped playing it now.
"I played a game two years ago against Cuala in a championship quarter-final, which we unfortunately lost by four points. I think I came on in midfield. I was on David Treacy for a bit but I was taken off him pretty swiftly. He was doing a job on me.
"It was tough but I was passionate and I loved both sports."
