Fitzgibbon Cup: UCD denied despite victory as DIT, CIT and IT Carlow cruise to quarters

DIT, IT Carlow and Cork IT all ensured quarter-final places with victories in Round 3 of the Fitzgibbon Cup tonight.

DIT were never troubled on their visit to Maynooth University as they scored a 4-11 to 1-9 win over the hosts to set-up a quarter-final date away to DCU next week.

In Borrisoleigh, IT Carlow romped to a 3-16 to 1-7 triumph against Garda College after having registered three first-half goals in what turned out to be a one-sided affair.

Cork IT will play Mary Immaculate next week after seeing off the challenge of WIT on their home turf by 0-15 to 0-9.

The Cork students had led their counterparts by just two points (0-7 to 0-5) at the interval before pulling away in the second-half to seal a place in the last eight.

In Belfield, UCD’s come from behind victory against UL was not enough to see them through to next week.

The Dublin lads had trailed by 0-9 to 2-2 at the break against the holders before levelling early on in the restart through substitute Jake Malone and snatching a 3-8 to 0-15 win in injury-time.

In the end, it was NUI Galway who would claim the better score difference in Group A despite their 1-19 to 0-15 loss at the hands of UCC at the 4G pitch in Páirc Uí Chaoimh earlier today.

Kerry forward Shane Conway top-scored for the Cork students with 0-7 while Shane Kingston’s goal inside the opening three minutes helped pave an early path for victory.

Along with Conway, Cork’s Mark Coleman and Mark Kehoe (Tipperary) were in fine scoring form for the visitors during the first-half as they went in leading at the break by a commanding 1-13 to 0-5.

Evan Niland dragged NUIG back into contention in the second-half and the seven-point margin proved crucial for the visitors in the finish as they’d end up pipping UCD for a last eight berth against Limerick IT on score difference.

UCC will now face IT Carlow with home advantage next week for a place in the semi-finals.
