Gaughan keen to build on success

Left, Alan Gaughan celebrates Westmeath's Allianz FL Division 4 final success over Wexford at Croke Park and right, the Athlone star in the colours of Garryowen with the man-of-the-match award from the 2012 Ulster Bank Bateman Cup final.

Westmeath footballer Alan Gaughan is a dual star with a difference.

While many jump to the conclusion that when the term dual star is used, it means that the player concerned plays hurling and football, that is not always the case.

Gaughan has made a big impact with the Westmeath football squad, helping them to the NFL Division 4 title, while he has also impressed with Buccaneers Rugby club having helped them to promotion from Division 1B of the Ulster Bank League.

And the Athlone club footballer is keen for the success to continue rolling in, starting with a win over Offaly on Sunday.

"This year has been brilliant in sport so far. When I was called into the Westmeath squad at the start of the year, it was an easy decision to make," said Gaughan.

"I sat down with the Westmeath manager Tom Cribbin  and we spoke about the position I was in. He completely understood that during the winter months I was going to be tied up with Buccaneers on the Saturday, but he was happy to allow me to manage my time. I'm a very proud Westmeath man and I love representing my county at inter-county level."

He added: "Offaly will be itching to get one over on us, especially after we beat them last year by a single point. Their run in the league may not have went to plan but some of their key players have returned to the fold and the Offaly team that will turn up on Sunday will be a real championship side."
