The young Cavan man who was killed in a road accident in New Zealand last Friday was a capable underage Gaelic footballer.
Martin Cadden, who died when his car struck a tree in Leeston, Canterbury, represented his native Mullahoran at U12 and U14 level. He had been working as a farm contractor in Southbridge since late 2013, having studied agriculture in Ballyhaise before that.
Poignantly, Martin, the only son of Michael and Ann Cadden from Loughduff, Mullahoran had celebrated his 22nd birthday just four days before his tragic death. He is also survived by two sisters.
"He was involved in GAA as a young kid and played at U12 and U14 level for Mullahoran GAA club," a source told the Irish Independent.
"If he was playing full back, you weren't getting past him because he was very strong.
"From the age of 17, he was away working in England, America and then New Zealand. He was involved in farm work from a young age and that's why he moved overseas so that he'd get more experience."
Former councillor Daniel 'the Gunner' Brady said that the community is devastated. Danny, a close fiend of the Cadden family explained how Martin once worked for him and described him as ' a lovable and good-humoured young man'
