Rackard Cup: Louth come good in second half

May 20, 2012
Louth produced a dominant second half performance to overwhelm Sligo 3-15 to 1-9 in their Nicky Rackard Cup quarter-final at Markievicz Park.

With Shane Fennell - whose younger twin brothers David and Paul were part of the Westmeath team that shocked Antrim in the Leinster SHC down the N4 in Mullingar - starring, the Wee County outscored the home side 2-9 to 0-2 in the second period to qualify for the last four in style.

After a 30-minute delay to the start of the game which was caused by the enforced late arrival of referee Eamon Hasson, Sligo shaded the first half exchanges to go into the break leading 1-7 to 1-6.

However, nine first half wides came back to haunt them in the second half as Ger Smyth's 38th minute goal set Louth on the road to victory. The hosts' misery was complete when impressive forward Damien Burke was sent off on a second yellow card 13 minutes from the end.
