Retired Galway footballer Matthew Clancy says he had "eleven great years" with the Tribesmen.

The Dublin-based engineer opted not to take up Alan Mulholland's invitation to hook up with the county squad for this year's championship and has confirmed that he has now retired from intercounty football.

The Oughterard clubman, who made his final Galway appearance in last summer's Qualifier defeat to Meath at Navan, says in The Irish Sun:

"I had eleven great years playing for Galway. But the time is now right for me to finish up.

"I am grateful to Alan Mulholland and the management as they have given me plenty of time to reach my decision.

"I got married at Christmas and I am living and working in Dublin. It is a very long trip home so I felt I couldn't give the commitment this year."
