Prendergast bows out

Waterford's Declan Prendergast
Declan Prendergast has brought down the curtain down on his 12-year Waterford senior hurling career.

The towering defender from Ardmore won four Munster SHC medals in 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010 and a National League medal in 2007. He also played in Waterford's ill-fated 2008 All-Ireland final appearance against Kilkenny.

"I just feel I have enough done at this stage," he told the Irish Examiner.

"I'm involved for 12 years and feel that that's probably enough."

Prendergast, whose brother Seamus has also been a mainstay of the Waterford team over the past decade, was handed his debut by Gerald McCarthy against Laois in 2000 and went on to star at full back and wing back. He regards the four Munster SHC successes as the highlights of his career.

"I suppose in a dozen years you have ups and downs, but those were great days for all of us as players and obviously for the supporters, who followed us loyally through all the years. The one disappointment would be that we never won the big one, the All-Ireland. The lads still have a chance, though, they have a good team and a mix of young lads and experienced players. Hopefully they'll manage it, even though it'll be very tough," he said.

Prendergast plans to continue lining out for Ardmore.

"I plan on playing on for the club for a few years yet. Playing inter-county hurling means that you have to put a lot of things on hold, including your club a lot of the time. I'm looking forward to pitching in for training with the lads again. Hopefully we can win something in the county."
