Whelahan takes charge of Kiltormer

Former Offaly great Brian Whelahan
Offaly hurling great Brian Whelahan has been appointed manager of Galway side Kiltormer for the coming season.

The Birr clubman, who was the only player from the modern era to be named on the GAA's Hurling Team of the Millennium in 2000, is hoping to revive the once-mighty east Galway club's fortunes and will be looking to players from recent successful underage teams to do that. Kiltormer have been living in the shadow of the likes of Athenry and Portumna since winning the All-Ireland club title in 1992.

Kiltormer chairman Peter Campbell said: "We think Brian will bring a new freshness to the club and further develop our players. Maybe he can bring a bit of the Offaly style of hurling which proved so successful in his time as a player."

Whelahan, who won two All-Ireland medals with Offaly and four All-Ireland club titles with Birr in a glittering career, has previous managerial experience with top Laois club Camross.
