Farney suffer Corey blow

Monaghan's Vinny Corey
Vinny Corey has been ruled out of Monaghan's Ulster SFC opener against Tyrone in Omagh on Sunday.

Manager Eamonn McEneaney is resigned to being without the versatile star who has suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury while forced him to miss part of the Farney County's NFL campaign.

"Vinny is out," McEneaney revealed in the Irish News.

"The hamstring came back on him again. He got back from the injury, got playing, but then it went on him again. The injury is on the same leg as the ankle injury he had, so there could be other problems there."

Monaghan are also planning without Gavin Doogan, who has undergone surgery to remove a piece of broken bone from a joint, while injury also robs them of the services of David Hughes and Shane Smyth. In addition, Tommy Freeman and Rory Woods have emigrated, while Dermot McArdle and Owen Lennon are struggling to make it.

"We cannot afford to be without too many. Add that to the list of players missing from last year and we could have eight or nine players starting Ulster championship for the first time," McEneaney added.

"Dermot is not quite 100 per cent, while Owen is on the right road in terms of recovery, but the Tyrone game might come too soon for him. That decision is in the balance."
