April 10, 2011
Longford join Roscommon in the NFL Division Four decider after beating Carlow by 1-21 to 1-12 at Pearse Park.
Both sides are also promoted to Division Three.
Roscommon were already through to the decider before a ball was kicked today and they preserved their unbeaten record as they defeated Leitrim by 1-14 to 0-15 at Dr Hyde Park.
In the all-important Longford / Carlow clash, Sean McCormack hit five points as the hosts led by 0-13 to 0-5 at half time.
An early Paul Barden goal eventually had the winners off to an encouraging start after Carlow got the first two points; Longford led by 1-10 to 0-5 after 25 minutes. The midlanders were outstanding in the second quarter and added three more points before the break.
JJ Smyth registered a Carlow goal 20 minutes after the restart and was sent off within a minute. Carlow moved closer but Longford steadied the ship with the likes of Paddy Dowd, Paul Barden and Brian Kavanagh to the fore.
Elsewhere, it was a disappointing day for Wicklow, who could only manage a 1-17 to 0-20 draw with Clare at Aughrim. The visitors led by 0-11 to 0-7 at the break.
Two Gary Brennan points got the Banner County off to a flier. Goalkeeper Joe Hayes saved inspirationally from Darren Hayden and Clare led by 0-8 to 0-5 with half time approaching. The visitors got three of the next five points to lead by four at the interval.
A brilliant Leighton Glynn goal levelled the scores at 1-17 to 0-20 with a minute to play but it was too little too late for the Garden County.
In the day's early throw-in, with nothing at stake, Fermanagh beat London by 0-14 to 0-8 in Brewster Park.
