Young facing Garda probe
October 23, 2010
Former Laois hurling star James Young, who is a member of the Gardai, is under investigation for an alleged assault on a photographer after a recent club match.
The 30-year-old, who joined the force three-and-a-half years ago, has been suspended for 96 weeks by the Laois Competitions Control Committee (CCC) arising from the incident which is alleged to have happened at the end of a controversial Laois IHC semi-final between Young's club Clonaslee-St. Manman's and Ballyfin on September 25.
His father, Eugene, received a life ban from the Association for allegedly shouting abuse at the end of the same match. Garda Young is being accused of striking local sports photographer Alf Harvey with his hurl, while his father allegedly verbally abused the same man.
Clonaslee-St Manman's players and mentors were angered by the amount of injury-time played at the end of the match which Ballyfin won courtesy of a late, disputed goal scored by Dermot McGill.
Last week, the Laois CCC did not expel Clonaslee from competition but handed out a raft of suspensions, fined the club €2,000 and banned it from playing matches at home for five years.
Along with Garda Young, Tommy Tynan jnr (player), Ross Tynan (supporter), Glen McEvoy (player) and Ned McEvoy (selector) were all unsuccesful in having 96-week suspensions overturned when they appeared before Laois' Central Appeals Committee (CAC).
