Blessington club notes

September 06, 2021

Good evening. We had another full on week with plenty of football, last Monday evening alone we held 4 home matches. It was great to see so much activity on our grounds and also we’re getting to use our new lights on the top pitch which are a fantastic addition to the club.

Our senior men are busy preparing for the upcoming championship but first up they will face Baltinglass next Friday in the rescheduled Herbie Hill cup final. The team will travel to Baltinglass (TBC) and would appreciate as much club support as possible. Keep an eye on our social media pages for updates.

Minors Played table toppers St Nicks at home on Monday 30th..St Nicks unbeaten to date in the championship stayed that way after the game. Blessington created some early chances but didn’t convert them. Nicks at the other end were more clinical. At half time lads were down by 7 points. Blessington outscored St Nicks to come with 3 points but a late goal from Nicks sealed the win. Poor 1st half but lads improved in 2nd half.

On Saturday evening were at home V Baltinglass again a poor start from Blessington gave Baltinglass a big lead early errors and poor marking and passing left lads with a mountain to climb. Blessington improved in the 2nd half worked harder and took 9 scores to Baltinglass 5 but the damage was done in the 1st half.

Team will Regroup this week and focus on the next game. Backs against the wall now with must win games from here on out but the team will rise to the challenge. Wishing speedy recoveries to Sam Gough, Adam Smith, Connor Richardson, Brian Richardson and Matthew King, hopefully we get to see you all playing again before the year is out.

Big thanks to U15 management and players; Leon Templin, Padraic Quinn, David Gilmore, Ben Carroll and Jack Byrne who made sure we could field a full team.

Thanks to Roísín Ellis and Jess Brennan for doing physio during the week.

U15 boys

Our Div 03 Squad played St Pats away in Rescheduled Champ game and for various reasons we ended up with Bare 15 players starting/Finishing game.

Thanks to 08 lads Owen Vickers  (Goalkeeper)Jamie O’Toole and Patrick Murray for Stepping up to help us fulfil Fixture. We started game very well and created some great scores. We went a bit out of game before halftime. But Second half was an outstanding work hard ethic/Turnovers and working ball through Hands to Create and finish some fantastic scores. Work rate of these 15 players right to Final whistle was fantastic and fully deserved 2.08 to 2.06 away win

Well Done lads after disappointing results In  Feile after playing well in competition these lads deserved a win.

Upcoming fixtures for this week as follows, Wednesday 8th Div 01 home to Eire og

Div 03 Bye.

Saturday 11th Div 01 at home to St Pats

Div 03 Away to AGB. Best of luck to everyone involved .

U12’s Battled to a home win over Eire Og on Monday evening. The lads played well in patch’s and pulled away in last quarter. The overall performance was a mixed bag with plenty to improve on going forward.

Best on the night were Alfie Mc , Oisin Quigley in defence Calum Jordan Dempsey , Oisin Kelly in Midfield .

Final score

Blesso 5-10  Eire og 3-5

U10’s Great win at home tonight against a strong Eire Og team in the U10 player pathway league. From the very start the lads put their stamp on the game with some great turnovers and slick moving of the ball. The highlight of the game was the amount of times we recycled the ball to a player in a better position. Finished on a score line of 34-12.

Our U10 coaches treated the team to a morning in CP Adventure in Russborough house this morning. The kids had a brilliant morning doing activities. The kids were a credit to the club and really bonded and had fun. Big thanks to Michelle and her crew of mammies that organized refreshments for the kids and coaches after.

Well done to the lads for giving everything a go, zip line, archery, Rock climbing etc. Thanks   Emma Kelly for making cakes for all afterwards in Russborough, playground on the doorstep sure who wouldn’t have fun. Roll on next week, 3 games for the lads, busy busy!!

Ladies Football

Blessington’s Feile victory(first in Wicklow since 1997)

Division 1 in Bray.

Round 1

Blesso 3-9 St Pats 1-1

Scorers:

Aisling Brennan 1-4,Robyn Brennan 1-4,Clara Keane 1-0,Georgia Mae Keeley 0-1

Played on the 3G pitch in slippy conditions Blesso dominated the game from start to finish with great work all over the pitch. Our player of the match was wing back Abbie O’Riordan with some super turnovers and link up play.

Round 2

Baltinglass 2-2 Blesso 0-7

Scorers:

Aisling Brennan 0-5,Robyn Brennan 0-1,Ava O’Driscoll 0-1.

Credit to Baltinglass who were much more fired up than us for this game and took the victory with a last minute goal. We never got going great at all in this game and the injury to Paige McDonald early on unsettled us. Player of the match was Aisling Brennan who was immense with free kicks on target.

Round 3

Blesso 2-11 An Tochar 0-2

Scorers:

Aisling Brennan 2-3,Robyn Brennan 0-4,Aibhe King 0-2,Clara Keane 0-1, Asia Duggan 0-1

Disappointed with the previous loss our girls came out of the traps ready for this game and put in a much better performance and a big win. Player of the match was Ava O’Driscoll with a fine contribution to all of our play.

Semi Final vs Tinahely

Result: Blesso 5-6 Tinahely 1-0

Scorers:

Robyn Brennan 2-1,Aibhe King 2-1,Clara Keane 1-1,Aisling Brennan 0-3

As always a good healthy battle between the two sides and we commend Tinahely who never gave up but fortunate for us our performances were improving with every game and we saved the best for the semi and the final…only back from a broken collarbone and beaming with finally putting a jersey back on, our player of the match with an outstanding game and tireless work was Aibhe King.

Carnew were our final opponents and we both knew all our girls were tiring coming into this game. But low and behold these fantastic Blesso girls had more in the tank and completely emptied it with a powerful team finale. From the first to the final whistle we showed no mercy and dominated all over as our girls had nothing else in mind but taking the Ellen Kinch trophy home! Excellent all round team work but what a brilliant display of shot selection and scoring in attack to take the Feile honours in style with player of the match Robyn Brennan on excellent form and a thorn in the side to the Carnew full back with her darting runs and clinical finishing.

Result: Blesso 4-13 Carnew 1-0

Scorers:

Robyn Brennan 2-5,Aisling Brennan 1-2,Aibhe King 1-1,Ava O’Driscoll 0-3,

Sophie O’Driscoll 0-1,Aoife Cullen 0-1

We were so very proud of all the girls and the tremendous joy of seeing our leader and captain Aoife Cullen lift the cup was just reward for all the hard work this group of girls put in.

Thank you to Pat Brennan & Martin O’Driscoll for doing umpire for most games. Thanks to Dominic for all the hard work overseeing the organisation and smooth running of the whole competition. Massive thanks to all our parents/supporters and covid officer Lynn McMahon for all you do as so much of it is unseen but we appreciate every bit of it.

Aughrim here we come

Well done to our girls with 4 out of 4 wins to qualify for the final with a strong away win vs a battling An Tochar.

Great win on Saturday from our u12 blue team v AGB. AGB started out strong and were 3 goals up in the first 12 minutes, but blesso fought back and were only 1 point down at half time. The second half blesso threw everything at AGB and it paid off with a stunning goal from Lauren McKeevar to win the match. A brilliant team performance from all our girls especially Emma Doherty and Lauren McKeevar but POTM goes to Megan Mulhall who came on at half time and scored 3 Great points. Well done girls
