Wexford powered past Westmeath with a 2-23 to 1-15 victory in Mullingar this afternoon to get themselves up and running in Division 1 Group A of the Allianz Hurling League.

It was Westmeath that had enjoyed the better start on their home turf, with Killian Doyle’s points helping them to lead by 0-5 to 0-3 after 13 minutes of play.

Conor McDonald and captain Lee Chin eventually steered the Model men in front but they’d only manage to lead by the minimum (0-11 to 0-10) at the halfway stage.

However, within 10 minutes of the restart McDonald would have the sliotar in hosts’ net and, despite Owen McCabe cancelling it out almost immediate at the other end, the Slaneysiders were able to kick on.

Ross Banville came off the bench to net the victors’ second goal and he’d supply a couple of points as well, which were backed up by Cathal Dunbar, Conor Hearne and Rory Higgins before Doyle saw red for a second caution towards the finish.
