Davy Glennon fired a hat-trick of goals as Westmeath scored a 5-19 to 1-17 victory over Down this evening in Thurles to book a return to Division 1 of the Allianz Hurling League.
It was Down that had made the better start to this Division 2A decider, running up a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 10 minutes, but they conceded 1-5 unanswered including Glennon’s first goal of the evening and from there Westmeath went on to dominate.
Killian Doyle’s frees surged the Lake men towards a 1-10 to 0-8 half-time lead and Doyle would lash in a superb goal seven minutes into the restart to leave Down with a real mountain to try and climb.
Niall Mitchell set-up Glennon’s second goal in the 49th minute and the sliotar would be in the Mourne men’s net again 13 minutes later via the stick of Cormac Boyle.
Chris Egan got a goal back for the Ulster side in injury-time but even that would be erased by ex-Galway star Glennon completing his hat-trick late on as Westmeath made their return to the top tier at the first attempt.
