Newly-appointed Meath senior football manager Robbie Brennan believes Conor Gillespie’s knowledge of the local club scene will prove invaluable.

Brennan completed his management ticket earlier this week with the addition of the former Royal County midfielder who was involved with county development squads before guiding his beloved Summerhill to a first Keegan Cup success in a decade last year. Ironically, Summerhill’s SFC reign was ended at the quarter-final stage by Brennan’s club Dunboyne last weekend, which leaves Gillespie free to concentrate on his new selector’s role with Meath.

"Everyone knows Conor's career was cut short, a brilliant midfielder. Had it not been, God knows where he might have ended up. But he has a brilliant football brain, you could sit and talk football for hours," Brennan said on Meath GAA’s social media platforms.

"He has that local experience and already he's working behind-the-scenes after only a couple of days away from Summerhill. So really looking forward to picking his brain and seeing what comes out and what we can build on."

The current Kilmacud Crokes boss added: "I've already seen some of the stuff he's sent on. He has details on everybody from a Summerhill point of view, so we'll be tapping into that. Coming from some of those other squads, he has a massive in-depth local knowledge, which will help all of us."
