Fermanagh eased into the quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup with an emphatic 3-27 to 1-13 win over New York this afternoon's preliminary quarter-final in Enniskillen.
Mattie McDermott’s early goal helped Declan Bonner’s side hold a 1-6 to 0-1 lead after eight minutes, and while the Exiles responded with a Killian Butler goal two minutes later, skipper Ronan McCaffrey, Garvan Jones (2, 1 two-pointer), Conor Love and Ultan Kelm hit scores that moved the home side towards a 1-13 to 1-6 half-time lead.
McDermott (free) stretched the Fermanagh lead after the change of ends and things would get worse for New York when they saw Cian O’Dea sent off on a second yellow card in the 42nd minute.
The Ernesiders pushed on for a double-digit lead after that and added goals via Aogan Kelm and Darragh McGurn in the closing quarter before going on to win by 20 points in the end.
Sligo booked their place in the last eight of the Tailteann Cup race thanks to a 2-16 to 0-16 third round win against London in Ruislip.
Canice Mulligan’s point was the difference between the sides at half-time (0-7 to 0-6) before Gavin Gorman hammered in Sligo’s first goal six minutes into the restart.
A Lee Deignan two-pointer pushed the Yeats men further ahead prior to Mulligan slamming the ball to the London net to and another orange flag from Alan McLoughlin put 10 between the sides.
The hosts did halve their deficit with the help of points from Shay Rafter and Ciaran Diver, but Conor Walsh’s late score would put a seal on the win for Sligo.
In Carrick-on-Shannon, Wexford completely shut out hosts Leitrim in the first-half before recording a 0-20 to 1-12 win to advance to the knock-out stages.
Incredibly, the scoreboard read 0-14 to 0-0 at half-time, with Ben Brosnan, Eoghan Nolan, Darragh Brooks and Glen Malone among the scores for the visitors.
Back-to-back two-pointers by Oisin McLoughlin helped Leitrim back into the contest after the turnaround and the same player would add another long-range effort before both sides were reduced to 14 men.
The incident saw Leitrim’s Conor Quinn and Liam Coleman of Wexford both red-carded ahead of Jack Kelly’s late goal making it a five-point game and Mark Rossiter (free) rounding off the winners’ tally in the dying stages.
Wicklow came good in the second-half to see off Tipperary by 1-17 to 0-12 in Aughrim.
Kevin Quinn netted the game’s only goal after seven minutes for Oisin McConville’s side, but it was Tipp that led at the halfway stage (0-7 to 1-3) after Paddy Creedon’s two-pointer was backed up by the scores of Sean O’Connor (free) and Steven O’Brien.
O’Connor (free) and Creedon increased the Premier lead early in the second-half ahead of the home side sending over the next seven scores unanswered, including a Quinn two-pointer.
Quinn added another from beyond the arc and Liam O’Neill sent over another to help cement the eight-point win for the Leinster side.
Meanwhile, Conor Laverty’s Down side were comfortable in their 4-18 to 1-14 win over Longford at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this evening.
Finn McElory and Patrick Brooks netted goals in the first-half to help usher the Mourne men towards a 2-8 to 0-7 lead at the break.
Ryan Magill supplied Down’s third goal a minute into the restart and, while Oran Kenny pulled back two points for the Midlanders, Jamie Dolan would have the ball in their net for the fourth time come the 45th minute.
Dessie Reynolds pulled a goal back for Longford late on, but Down’s place in the knock-out stages was all but confirmed prior to Oran Cunningham and Caolan Mooney sending over points in the dying minutes for them.
