Shane Dooley’s last minute free saw Tullamore come from 10 points behind to secure a 4-14 to 2-20 draw against Birr in the Offaly senior hurling championship at St Brendan’s Park yesterday evening.

Having edged a 0-10 to 0-8 lead at half-time, Birr were seemingly cruising following two goals in quick succession from Morgan Watkins, who finished with 2-5 from play, after the change of ends.

However, the visitors got a lifeline when Luke Egan hit the net for them in the 40th minute and Dooley would do likewise 10 minutes later to leave just five points between the sides.

Birr pushed their lead back out to six, but the game’s home stretch belonged to Tullamore as Cormac Egan set substitute Jay Sheerin up for their third goal ahead of Dan Fox hammering in their fourth in injury-time with an incredible finish.

County marksman Eoghan Cahill would nudge the hosts ahead again via a free, however there’d still be time for Egan to win a free at the other end which veteran Dooley nervelessly converted to earn Tullamore a share of the points.
