Dessie Hutchinson wants to see penalty shootouts scrapped in hurling and replaced with 'overtime showdowns'.

The Waterford sharpshooter missed a penalty in Ballygunner's All-Ireland club SHC semi-final shootout loss to St Thomas' last year and believes 'overtime showdowns' - which were one of the proposals put forward by the Football Review Committee - would be a a fairer way of deciding games that finish level after extra-time. 

The concept would see play restart and continue until one team scores. When that happens, the other team must match that feat from the kickout. The ball then returns to the referee who will throw it in again for a 'golden score' and the team that scores next will win the game.

“Look, I don't think any game should end on penalties, especially in hurling where it's such an entertaining game," Hutchinson said at the launch of this year’s AIB Club Championships

“There was nothing stopping ourselves and Thomas' going for another battle. It would have been the same type of outcome, it would have been the same type of game and it would have given everyone another game to smile about.

“Then there's a team going home after losing on penalties. And look, I'd say the exact same if it had been the other way around where Thomas' had lost on penalties. 

“It wouldn't have been fair, but that's just the nature of it at the moment and there's nothing we can do about that."
