Antrim camogie star Maeve Kelly says there were times that she thought she’d never play again after the ACL injury she suffered five years ago.

Sunday saw Kelly scoring three points at Croke Park as Antrim triumphed to the All-Ireland intermediate camogie championship title with a resounding 1-22 to 0-11 victory over Laois which sees them promoted to the senior ranks for 2027.

Speaking to GAA.ie, Kelly said that what she went through to comeback from that devasting injury was “all worth it” as she looks forward to playing against the top teams in the country next summer.

“Five years ago, I was on a high coming off of Croke Park, and I thought my journey was just starting going into senior camogie. And it was. But a couple of months after, I got a foot injury, and I got back and I got an ACL.

“There were times when I thought I’d never hurl again. And then when I got back I was struggling.

“Everyone’s journey is different, and I was hearing, ‘You’ll get back better,’ and you’re expecting it to just click but it doesn’t just happen like that. It really gets you down, but I really got down to it this year. I moved back home and I put a lot into county camogie. It takes a lot of a person, but now, it’s all worth it. The last five years were worth it and it shows, you should never give up.”

“I cannot wait for senior.”
