Monaghan have confirmed the appointment of John McEntee as their new senior football manager.

The 2002 Armagh SFC winner succeeds Gabriel Bannigan, who stepped down in controversial circumstances in August. Antrim native Tony Austin was also ratified as the Farney County's new senior hurling manager at last night's county board meeting.

New football boss McEntee managed Inniskeen for the last four years, during which he led them to SFC final appearances in 2023 and 2025. He previously steered Clontibret to a Monaghan SFC title in 2019. Details of his backroom team have yet to be announced.

A county board statement read: “John McEntee brings a wealth of experience, leadership and commitment to the role and we look forward to working with him as preparations begin for the challenges ahead.

"Tony Austin from Rossa GAC in Antrim also brings a wealth of experience to the role of Senior Hurling Manager having coached Castleblayney Hurling Club to four Monaghan Senior Hurling Championship titles and the 2023 Ulster Junior Hurling Championship.

"At county level he has served as a coach with the Down senior hurlers during their Christy Ring and Joe McDonagh Cup campaigns."
