The North’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill has welcomed the commencement of works to ‘prepare for the regeneration’ of Casement Park.

Demolition works are set to resume next week, paving the way for the long-awaited redevelopment of the West Belfast venue, which has lain derelict since 2013.

Ms O'Neill wrote on X: "I welcome the news that work will begin at Casement Park next week to prepare for its regeneration.

"I am a firm believer in the power of sport and the lasting impact it brings to people’s lives, our communities, and local economy.

"Building a new Casement Park stadium is a key Executive priority. We must work together to deliver on a transformative vision for sports."

Earlier this month, Ulster GAA CEO Brian McAvoy wrote in his annual report that 2026 would be the year when "it appears that we will finally be entering the delivery phase", while Ulster GAA has since sent a letter to local residents informing them on the impending enabling works.

"As the project progresses, we move closer to delivering our provincial stadium that will provide lasting sporting, social and economic benefits for the local area and wider region," the letter read.

"We would like to thank you, our neighbours, the local community and GAA members for the continued support and understanding as this transformative project advances."
