There is sadness in Cork hurling circles at the passing of two-time All-Ireland SHC winning forward Ger Fitzgerald after an illness.
Aged 60, the Midleton clubman won the Liam MacCarthy Cup twice in 1986 and ’90 when he scored 4-4 and 2-6 respectively across the two campaigns. In doing so, he emulated his famous father Paddy who was goalkeeper on Cork’s 1966 All-Ireland SHC winning team. The corner forward also captained the Rebels to a Munster SHC title in 1992 and won a National League the following year following an epic three-game saga against Wexford.
In addition, Fitzgerald won four Cork SHC medals as a player with Midleton and one as manager in 2021. He also helped the Magpies to All-Ireland club SHC glory in 1988 with his father as manager, and later managed both the Cork minor and U21 teams and served as a senior selector also.
"He's a huge loss to the club and the GAA in Cork," Fitzgerald’s former club and county team-mate, and current Midleton GAA chairman John Fenton told RTÉ.
