There is profound sadness in Cork hurling circles at the passing of a talented young hurler following a tragic accident.
Midleton GAA has led the tributes to 21-year-old Darragh McCarthy who died in hospital after falling from an upper storey of a student accommodation building in Cork city last week. He was in his second year of a bachelor’s degree in sports studies at Munster Technological University and was working part-time in the Fota Resort Hotel & Golf Club.
Only last year, Darragh helped Midleton to their first Cork U21HC ‘A’ title in 11 years after they defeated St Finbar’s in the final.
“It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we learnt of Darragh’s untimely passing. A young man of great character and presence who was a credit to his family and our club,” his club said in a social media post
“Our focus remains on remembering Darragh as a player, friend and clubmate and supporting his family over these most difficult times.”
Darragh is survived by his parents Niall and Aoife, siblings Aisling and Niall Óg as well as extended family and friends.
