The funeral took place over the weekend of the well-known Mayo GAA personality Austin Garvin.

The Claremorris man, who died in the care of the Mayo Hospice, coached the Westerners to an All-Ireland MFC title in 1971 and subsequently served as manager. In more recent years, he was better known as a sports reporter for The Mayo News and Midwest Radio.

Leading the tributes to the deceased, Mayo GAA said: “Austin most notably managed the Mayo minors throughout the 1970s to Connacht and All-Ireland titles.”

Austin is survived by his wife Mary, children Paul, Adrian and Deirdre, brothers Tom, Michael and Philip, grandchildren Sophie, Leah, Dylan, Jacob and Seth, daughter-in-law Cora, Paul’s partner Imelda and a wide circle of relatives, neighbours and friends.
