All-Ireland U21 winning manager Mike Solan has emerged as a candidate to succeed James Horan as Mayo’s next senior football manager.

The Ballaghaderreen clubman guided Mayo to All-Ireland U21 glory in his first year in charge in 2016 and has been part of Andy Moran’s backroom team in Leitrim this year.

Like fellow county man Kevin McStay, it is understood that Solan has also put together a star-studded backroom team in his bid for the vacancy.

It includes Armagh All-Ireland winner Aidan O’Rourke, Sligo All-Star Eamonn O’Hara, former League of Ireland manager Alan Murphy and ex-Mayo player Mark Ronaldson.

With the deadline for applications having closed yesterday (Friday), Mayo GAA officials are set to commence the interview process over the coming weeks.
