Despite a promising first half from the home side Meath suffered another heavy defeat, this time at the hands of Offaly, in round 3 of the Joe McDonagh Cup played at Lomans Park Trim. PHOTOS

Manager Steven Clynch and his troops will take some confidence from opening 30 minutes performance. 

Oisin Kelly got their games first goal and the visitors were 1-4 to 0-3 ahead after eight minutes. Killian Sampson got their second goal in the closing minutes and Johnny Kelly’s men were 2-17 to 0-11 in front. Meath and Nicky Potterton finished the half in style with the Kildalkey star scoring 2-1 to leave five points between the teams at the break.

That’s as good as it got for Meath who lost heavily to Laois last Saturday at the same venue. Six unanswered points from Offaly in the opening eight minutes extended their lead and when Charlie Mitchell got their third goal the lead was out to 3-24 to 2-13 after twelve minutes. Tom Shine gave the home support something to cheer about soon after with his sides third goal. Offaly replied within minutes with goals from Dan Bourke and Adam Screeney and added another seven points to Meath’s one to run out comfortable winners.

Meath go to Cusack Park in two weeks time to take on Westmeath while Offaly entertain Kerry at O’Connor Park.
