Birr 2-11

Shinrone 1-8

Birr came from two points down at half-time to win by six and claim their first RJ Barber Cup in eight years at Shinrone’s expense in St Brendan’s Park last Saturday.

Seeking a senior camogie and hurling championship double, a wind-assisted Shinrone led by 1-6 to 1-4 at the interval thanks to Grainne Egan’s ninth-minute goal. But Birr, who had dethroned long-time champions St Rynagh’s in the semi-final, dominated the second half and never looked back after Sheila Sullivan’s penalty gave them the lead.

The winners opened the scoring through Jennings, who top-scored with 1-7, but Shinrone hit back with Egan’s goal and were in control until Sarah Harding raised a green flag at the other end in the 16th minute. That gave Birr the lead, but Shinrone rallied with points from Egan and Christine Cleary to go into the break with their noses in front.

Egan twice traded points with Ellen Regan and Mairead Jennings after the restart, but Shinrone wouldn’t score again as Birr seized control after Sullivan’s 41st minute penalty. They missed a number of chances before finally pulling clear in the last 10 minutes with scores from Jennings and substitute Hannah Riley.
