Very League Division 2A Preview - Offaly v Meath

March 07, 2025

Offaly captain, Orlagh Phelan

Offaly go into this weekend's match against Meath having won their opening two matches in this year's League.  David Sullivan must be happy with how his team has performed overall in the two games so far but as always, managers will look for improvements.

Against Derry in the opening half, the number of frees conceded by Offaly will be a cause for concern and they will look to improve on this weekend.  Aside from the positive of winning his first two matches, the Offaly Manager will have been pleased with the range of scorers in both games, with 7 players hitting the target against Kerry and 6 against Derry last weekend.  With his team performing well in both games he has also had the benefit of give his subs plenty of game time which should stand them in great stead as the year progresses.

Meath have had a mixed start to their campaign.  They brushed aside the Armagh challenge in their opening match but lost out to Kerry last weekend so no doubt the Royal women will be looking to get back to winning ways against Offaly.

The last times the teams met was in the quarter finals of the Intermediate Championship last Summer in Semple Stadium.  On that occasion Offaly proved to be far too strong for Meath and blitzed them by hitting 5-18 to Meath's 3-6. It's unlikely this weekend's game will see that type of a scoreline but it's all to play for between two teams that will be hoping for a big year in 2025.

The match also has added significance for Offaly as they take to the field in Glenisk O'Connor Park.  Unfamiliar surroundings for the Offaly girls but they will no doubt relish the opportunity to play their first match in the county's number 1 ground.  The game will throw in at the earlier time of 12.00 noon.
