Niall Stack has stepped down as Tullamore senior football manager after transforming the club's fortunes in the last five years.
Appointed in 2020, Stack led his beloved Blues to five consecutive Offaly SFC finals, winning three of them in 2021 (after a replay against Rhode), 2023 and ’24. In doing so, Tullamore put county titles back-to-back for the first time since 1926. They scratched another itch when recording a first win in the Leinster club SFC since 1977 at Tinahely’s expense last month before putting eventual Leinster champions Cuala to the pin of their collar in the provincial semi-final.
The former player also delivered a four-in-a-row of Division 1 League titles and made Tullamore extremely difficult to beat. This was reflected in the fact that they lost just two games out of 52 between league and championship within their own county.
“It is with a heavy heart that Tullamore GAA announces that Niall Stack has decided to step down from his role as Senior Football manager,” the club said in a statement.
“Niall took over in 2020, and over the past 5 years, the team has achieved a remarkable level of consistency, reaching the County Final in each of those 5 years, claiming the Dowling Cup 3 times (2021, 2023 and 2024), and also winning the Division 1 league title for the past 4 years.
“In the past 4 years (2021 to 2024), the team has played a total of 52 matches across League and Championship in Offaly, and have only experienced defeat twice in that period (1 league game and 1 championship game).
“In Leinster, the team suffered a couple of agonising defeats in 2021 and 2023, before progressing to the semi-final this year, losing out narrowly to eventual champions Cuala, after defeating Tinahely in the quarter-final.
“There is no doubt that Niall leaves the squad in a great position to push on and compete for further honours in the years ahead.
“Niall has come to this difficult decision, based on family and life commitments, and we thank him for his dedication and hard work over the last 5 years, and we wish him and his family all the best in the years ahead."
