As Offaly prepare to face Laois in Saturday’s Joe McDonagh Cup final at Croke Park, one of the Faithful County’s most famous sons has called for the abolition of the second-tier championship.
Three-time All-Ireland SHC medallist Joe Dooley would rather see all teams compete in their respective provincial championships just as they do at minor and U20 level. Replying to a tweet from journalist Shane Stapleton who suggested that the McDonagh Cup finalists shouldn’t be allow to play in Liam MacCarthy preliminary quarter-finals, Dooley said: “Waterford played 4 games (in Munster) and only won 1, Galway played 5 (in Leinster) and only won 2. No disrespect, but both don’t deserve another chance.
“Would demean provincial championships. Scrap the Joe McDonagh Cup. All teams should be competing in Leinster / Munster as they do for minor / U20 competitions.”
