U20 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP RD 1

Na Fianna U20 Footballers are through to the Quarter Finals of the Championship but only just after   being pushed all the way by Shamrocks in their 1st Rd encounter last Tuesday week in Geashill with Na Fianna winning on a scoreline 2-12 to 1-11. Na Fianna as the U16 A Championship winners for the first and only time ever 4 years ago would be considered as contenders for this year’s U20 title and they hit the ground running from the off in this encounter opening the scoring with the first 6 points in a row inside the first 5 mins. Shamrocks got off the mark with 2 points on 10 mins before Na Fianna raised their first green flag on 12 mins when a shot was saved by the Shamrocks keeper and his attempted clearance was blocked down by and tapped into the net by Na Fianna full forward Morgan Tynan. Na Fianna added another point before the water break but thereafter for the remainder of the half the intensity dropped with Shamrocks doubling their tally with another 2 points to Na Fianna’s 1 so at halftime Na Fianna led 1-07 to 0-04. Despite Na Fianna getting the opening point in the 1st min of the second half Shamrocks seized their opportunity and clawed their way back into it scoring 1-04 without reply to draw level by the 10th min. This is how it remained for the next 10 mins with both sides then adding 2 points apiece before Shamrocks took the lead for the 1st time on 27 mins with a point from play. Facing an early exit Na Fianna showed their determination and were rewarded on 30 mins when Morgan Tynan again dispossessed the keeper and blasted the ball to the net for his and Na Fianna’s 2nd goal and to be sure of it Lee Mulpeter & Jacob Beatty completed the scoring with the final 2 points. Na Fianna will now face Edenderry parish side St Patricks in the Quarter Final on Tues 22nd September in Rhode.

NA FIANNA: Ryan Kinahan, Eoin McGuinness, David Boland, Eoin Corcoran, Mikey Buckley, Adam Strong, Aiden Pierce, David McElduff, Gavin Kelly (0-01), Jack Gorry, Glen Hassett, Craig Strong (0-01), Jacob Beatty (0-03), Morgan Tynan (2-04), Lee Mulpeter (0-03).

U13 C FOOTBALL COMPETITION RD 3

Na Fianna U13 No 2 Football Team completed the group stage of the C Competition with defeat to Shamrocks last Thursday evening in Mucklagh on a scoreline of 6-08 to 3-11 in what was a very competitive encounter between 2 evenly matched teams with just a couple of late goals clinching it for Shamrocks. In the first half Na Fianna had the greater possession and deservedly led at the break by 2-04 to 1-04 with the Na Fianna goals scored by Martin Conroy & Michael McAndrew both from crosses from the left wing and punched to the net. 3 goals inside the first 10 mins of the second half for Shamrocks put them in front and when a fine solo run through the middle saw Martin Conroy score his second and Na Fianna’s 3rd goal with 10 mins left the gap was back to just 3 points but then Shamrocks managed to score 2 more goals in the last 5 mins to claim the win. Na Fianna will now most likely play St Vincents in the C Competition Shield Final with the Fixture details TBC.

NA FIANNA: Tony Byrne, Cathal Shiel, Kajius Ramanauskas, Eoin Brophill, Cormac Staunton, Michael Cooney, Donal Connnolly, Rian Fenlon (0-01), Fionn Malone (0-02) Dara Flynn, Doonacha Cooney, Paddy Shiel (0-05), Michael McAndrew (1-01), Martin Conroy (2-01), Rory Kehoe.

SUBS: Adam Harte (for Cathal Shiel), Sean Dempsey (for Dara Flynn), Senan Farrell (0-01) (for Michael McAndrew), Evan Curling (for Rory Kehoe).

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP RD 3

Na Fianna’s reign as Minor A Football Championship winners is over as the defending champions just miss out on securing a place in the semi finals of this year’s competition as they finished 3rd in the group after losing out to Clara in Rd 3 last Saturday morning in Clara on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-11. In the first half Na Fianna were first out of the blocks to open the scoring with the first 2 points before Clara got off the mark with their opening 2 points by 10 mins to draw level. A point apiece followed with Clara then pulling ahead scoring 3 points in a row before  Na Fianna came back with 3 points of their own thanks to the accurate free taking abaility of midfielder Geordi O’Meara but Clara had the last word of the half with a point in injury time to lead at the break 0-07 to 0-06. Geordi O’Meara again drew the sides level as he slotted over a 45 early in the second half before disaster struck for Na Fianna on 7 mins with the concession of 2 goals one after the other. Na Fianna though did not give up and responded with the next 3 points but this was wiped out as Clara then scored the next 3 points before getting their 3rd goal on 25 mins to seal it with both sides adding just 1 more point in the remaining 5 mins. Na Fianna now move into the A Shield Semi Finals which Na Fianna won 2 years ago with Fixtures TBC.

NA FIANNA: Kieran Coonan, Niall McCabe, Sean Brady, Eamon Bolger, Dylan Cahill, Diarmuid Finneran, Adam Joyce, Joel Troy, Geordi O’Meara, (0-07) Sean Rattigan, Fergal Dolan, Ruairi Dunne (0-01), Oisin Henchy (0-03), Jack Kelly, Robbie Gallagher.

U13 A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Na Fianna U13 No 1 Football Team fly the flag for the club as they are the first side from the club this year to qualify for an A Championship Semi Final as they reached the U13 A Semi Finals following a comprehensive win over neighbours St Vincents in Rd 3 last Sunday morning in Geashill on a scoreline of 4-14 to 3-08 in what was most definitely the proverbial game of two halves as Na Fianna turned an 8 point half time deficit into a 9 point winning margin. Na Fianna were first off the mark with the opening 2 points followed by St Vincents raising their first white flag before Na Fianna struck for their first goal on 7 mins when a fine solo run from Oisinne Troy saw him finish to the net. This appeared to spurn St Vincents into action and they responded immediately with their first goal followed by a further 2-05 to just 2 points for Na Fianna over the remainder of the half so at half time St Vincents looked to be in control as they led 3-06 to 1-04. Looking to mount a comeback Na Fianna got the perfect start to the second half as Jack Fox won the throw in and sent in a high ball caught by Josh Sheeran who fired it to the net for goal no 2.  Na Fianna added a point before striking their 3rd goal on 5 mins team captain Jack Fox picked up the ball in midfield and weaved his way through to the square before planting it in the net and within a minute Cormac O’Grady sent over a point for Na Fianna to draw the sides level and this is how it remained until St Vincents retook the lead with a point just before the water break. Following the restart Na Fianna drew level and went in front with 3 points a row and clinched it with their 4th goal on 21 mins Cormac O’Grady’s shot from midfield bounced over the head of the keeper and into the net. From here Na Fianna powered on home scoring 5 more points to St Vincents 1. Na Fianna will now meet Ferbane in the Semi Final with Fixture details TBC.

NA FIANNA: Stephen Confrey, Dara Grehan, Ronan Hooper, Cathal Quinn, Cian Multaney-Kelly, Oisinne Troy (1-00), Stevie Byrne, Josh Sheeran (1-02), Jack Fox (1-04), Colm Nolan (0-02), Edward Mangan (0-04), Sean Dunne (0-01), Tadhg Lee, Lucas o’Meara, Cormac O’Grady (1-01).
