Monaghan boosted their chances of survival in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon by handing Donegal a 1-12 to 0-10 defeat in Ballybofey.

Seamus McEnaney’s side dominated the first-half despite playing against a stiff breeze as a goal from Andrew Woods sent them towards a commanding 1-7 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Woods has also provided the visitors’ last point of the half and they were very nearly in for a second goal early in the restart.

It provided Donegal with much needed wake-up call and they got scores from Paddy McBrearty, Aaron Doherty and the excellent Jason McGee to eventually narrow their deficit down to three.

The Farney men hit three wides before Kieran Duffy split the posts, but points from Michael Murphy and McBrearty had the margin at two for the closing quarter.

Micheál Bannigan and Duffy sailed over scores to steady the Monaghan ship after that as they handed the Tir Chonaill men their first defeat at MacCumhaill Park since 2010.
