Gowna became the first team to book their place in the last four of this year’s Cavan senior football championship after seeing off Ballyhaise by 3-10 to 1-12 at Kingspan Breffni last night.

With Ballyhaise having upset them in the second-round last month, the holders made sure to get themselves off to a red-hot start in this one by hitting an unanswered 1-2 inside the opening five minutes.

Conor Madden provided the goal for the Longford border men and Robbie Fitzpatrick would add another midway through the half as they raced towards a 2-5 to 0-3 interval lead.

Ryan Donohoe’s major six minutes into the restart made it a 10-point game and, while Adam Heaslip pulled back a goal for Ballyhaise, the intermediate champions bowed out here after a decent return to the topflight.

Next up in the Oliver Plunkett Cup race is the quarter-final clash of 14-time champions Cavan Gaels and 12-time winners Mullahoran (5pm) this evening, while Sunday sees derby showdowns between Ballinagh and Crosserlough (3pm) and Castlerahan and Ramor United. All games are set to be played at Kingspan Breffni.
