Awards: Intermediate Club Hurler of the Year
December 19, 2012

A happy Mick Cole with the Meath IHC Cup at Pairc Tailteann.
The Intermediate Hurling Championship provided us with plenty of excitment. Rathmolyon overcame the disappointment of 2011 to land the title at the expense of Wolfe Tones. Our contenders for the award are Mick Cole and John Farrell of Rathmoylon, Stephen Morris from Blackhall Gaels, Eanna Harrington of Wolfe Tones and Dunderry's Keith Callaghan.
Stephen Morris had a great year on the hurling field. The talented dual star was one of the driving forces behind Blackhall Gaels march to the quarter-final. The Gaels went through the group stages unbeaten and their reward was a quarter-final meeting with a very strong Dunderry side. Morris was outstanding that day. His point to give Blackhall the lead with a minute left was one of the best seen in Pairc Tailteann this year. Alas Dunderry fought back, brought the game to extra time and won it in the end 0-20 to 0-19. The dual club star has been a regular on the Meath senior hurling team this year.
Rathmolyon made up for the disappointment of losing the 2011 decider to Boardsmill by beating Wolfe Tones and making it back to the senior ranks. On the day The Village won 3-12 to 2-10 and had to withstand a late Tones rally to gain victory. Corner forward John Farrell gave a man of the match performance that day for the winners. Farrell showed his goal poaching abilities and ended up with a personal tally of 3-1. His third goal gave the winners a 3-9 to 0-8 lead and set them up for a memorable win.
Ace marksman Eanna Harrington was outstanding for Wolfe Tones hurlers in their march to the decider. The Tones clocked up some very impressive results along the way including a 5-21 to 0-6 demolition of Kilmessan and a 2-14 to 1-10 semi final win over Dunderry. Not for the first year, Harrington has been the club's top scorer. In the decider the half forward finished with a impressive eight points.
Most followers of hurling in Meath thought they had seen the end of the great Mick Cole after Rathmolyon lost to Boardsmill in the 2011 IHC Final. But Cole came back in 2012 and proved to be once again the main player for The Village as they made up for last year's disappointment to win the Tommy Kane Cup. At the tender age of 38 Cole was a match for any player fitness wise and hurling wise through the campaign. His eye for a score from play or frees are as good as ever. In the final Mick scored eight points.
Dunderry have been making great strides on the hurling field in the past few seasons. They qualified for the quarter-finals with some impressive group displays which included a draw with eventual champions Rathmolyon. In one of the best game of the year they defeated Blackhall Gaels in the quarter-final but came unstuck against Wolfe Tones in the semi. For years now Keith Callaghan has been a rock for both hurling and football teams in the parish. This year was no exception, especially for the hurlers. His fearless ability to win ball and take his scores were one of the features in this year's championship. Callaghan was outstanding in the win over Blackhall at Pairc Tailteann and finished with a personal tally of eight points.
Other players that caught our eye were Gary Mangan (Clann Na nGael), Tommy Shine (Kilskyre), Bob Doherty (Dunderry), Johnny Meyler (Blackhall Gaels) and Stephen Sheppard (Wolfe Tones).
Our award goes to Mick Cole.
