A big weekend is in store for followers of the Meath club hurling scene, with four finals across the senior and intermediate grades.
First up is the meeting of Rathmolyon and Clann na nGael in the Intermediate Hurling Championship final. The Village will be hoping to make up for last year’s disappointment, having lost to Kilskyre/Moylagh in the final.
Brian Gilsenan’s men sailed through the group stages with five wins from five to book their final spot. Clann na nGael lost their opening two rounds but regrouped to beat Gaeil Colmcille, Dunboyne and Drumree in the group stages before recording a comfortable win over Drumree in the semi-final.
A quick dash over to Boardsmill for the Senior B final between favourites Kilskyre/Moylagh and Dunderry.
The North Meath combination haven’t been beaten in two seasons of championship hurling, claiming the intermediate title along the way. Backboned by county stars Tom and Daire Shine, Seanie Geraghty, Darren O’Higgins and Fergal Flynn, Kilskyre/Moylagh encountered little difficulty in the group stages to book their final spot.
These two met in Round 2, with Kilskyre/Moylagh recording a comfortable 16-point win at Grangegodden.
Tommy Leavy’s men have been a different force since that defeat at Kells and bounced back with wins over O’Mahonys, Longwood and Killyon. They booked their final spot with nine points to spare over Longwood at Dunganny. The return of Luke Martin and Mark Leavy is a major plus for the men in black and white.
The return of the senior final to St Loman’s Park will bring back fond memories for many former hurlers.
Up until the last round, Kilmessan had been the form team in the group. A good draw with holders Ratoath in Round 1 was followed by wins over final opponents Kiltale, Trim and Na Fianna.
Despite the loss to Kildalkey in Round 5, Charlie Keena’s men topped the group and sealed a final spot for the first time since 2013. Seanie Doyle has been in great form. The full-forward has scored 2-37 over the five games and will be one to watch come Sunday.
The early Sunday morning throw-in sees Wolfe Tones and Boardsmill head to Athboy for the Intermediate B final. There was no separating these two when they met in the opening round at Kilskyre. An Evan Curley pointed free earned the Tones a draw in sweltering conditions at the North Meath venue.
Kiltale’s record in the group stages shows three wins, one draw and one defeat. That loss came in Round 2 against Kilmessan.
Kilmessan led 0-11 to 0-4 at the break. Mark Horan and Byrne increased that lead early in the second half. A mini-revival from Kiltale, with points from Jack Regan, Adam Murphy (2) and Peter Durnin, narrowed the lead, but by the 20th minute of the second half Kilmessan were well on their way to victory.
Four unanswered points, three from Doyle and one from half-back Kris Gorman, extinguished any hopes of a Kiltale comeback.
John Donoghue’s men bounced back to beat holders Ratoath, draw with Trim and defeat Na Fianna to earn a semi-final spot. There they produced their best performance, with the influential Hugh O’Sullivan helping them dethrone holders Ratoath at Dunganny.
Jack Regan has been in fine scoring form, with an impressive 2-45 over the six games.
