FL Div 10: Seneschalstown thirds edged out in biblical downpour

Seneschalstown's Aran Carey

Seneschalstown 0-13 St. Patrick’s 1-13

Seneschalstown went down to a three point defeat to St. Pat’s in Round 2 of the Division 10 League played in wintery like conditions in Fr. Tully Park. With a strong wind blowing up the pitch combined with the driving rain which fell incessantly from early evening, the team playing away from the clubhouse end were always going to be at a distinct advantage when backed by the elements.

It was the home side who opted to play backed by the conditions in the opening half after winning the toss but St. Patrick’s started quickest when finding the target first with a point from play and less than sixty seconds later they followed it up with another.

Seneschalstown began to settle and got on the board with a two point effort from Niall McCabe in the fourth minute but the games key score arrived minutes later when St. Pat’s got in for a goal against the breeze which would proved to be decisive in the outcome of the game.

Jamie Kirwan registered the home side’s second score which was given as a regular point rather than a two point effort but it didn’t deter the home side as they started to build some momentum. Jamie Barry chipped over a free in the 19th minute, before further efforts from play from Seán Davis, Ross Howard, and Niall McCabe added to the Seneschalstown advantage.

Jamie Barry kicked another two point effort from play and Davis added his second point of the game to leave Seneschalstown 0-11 to 1-02 but it was the visitors who got the last score of the half to reduce the half-time margin to five points.

Now playing into the wind, Seneschalstown would have been hoping to manager the game accordingly and did a rather good job of it for the first 11 minutes of the second half as it wasn’t until the 41st minute that St. Pat’s scored. When Aran Carey kicked Seneschalstown’s first score of the second half in the 47th minute they looked well set to hold on for victory but the concession of four scores on the trot, the last three of those being two pointers totally swung the momentum of the game in the Stamullen outfits favour as they moved from five behind to two up in space of seven minutes.

Despite a Ross Howard point with two minutes of time remaining to reduce the gap to the minimum, it was a case of deja vu from Seneschasltown’s Round 1 game as they couldn’t get any closer as St. Pat’s clipped over two further scores to win by a goal.

Despite not being there in person on the night, Mick Dillon’s Man of the match award went to hard working wing-back Liam Maguire.
