FL Div 2: Vincents no match for Simonstown

April 14, 2025

St. Vincents Gary Tuite

St. Vincent’s 0-09 Simonstown 3-12

St. Vincent’s welcomed the Simonstown to Masterson Park for this 4th Round tie of Division 2 in the sunshine. Later in the season Simonstown will compete for the Senior Championship while St. Vincent’s will aim to secure the Junior title. But for now, the sides faced each other on level terms in Division 2 of the League.

From the moment referee Andrew Lenehan threw up the ball it was obvious this game would be played at breakneck pace. The visitors were first on the scoreboard with a point from play, but Ryan Hand levelled matters in the next minute. Simonstown pressed hard and were rewarded with two points from play. They then won the next kickout and attacked at pace. Their shot on goal was cleared by Mark Crawley but the visitors made no mistake with the follow up and raised the green flag. Both sides were wide of the mark in the next few minutes including when the visitors were one-on-one with Evan Connor in goal. Gary Tuite pointed a free after 10 minutes, but the visitors replied by tacking on two more points from play. They had an attempt at goal but were denied by Davy Tallon, Mark Crawley and the post before fisting it wide. Conor Harford got a point from play after a quick Solo&Go. The visitor’s reply was emphatic as they added a second goal before adding a point from a 45. Gary Tuite scored from two free’s, both 2-pointers, to close out the half and leave the gap at 5 points.

Half Time: St. Vincent’s 0-07 Simonstown 2-06

Conor Harford got the second half under way with a lovely point from play. Simonstown responded immediately with a point from play and a pointed free. The next five minutes were scoreless before the visitors added another point from play. Gary Tuite added a point from a free after good build up play from Matt Griffin and Adam Andrews. Despite periods of excellent play from the home side they couldn’t break through the Simonstown defence anymore. The visitors added 2 points from frees before adding a decisive goal from play. They rounded out the scoring with another point from play.

Although this was a decisive victory for Simonstown, the home side will take heart from their performance. They battled hard throughout and at times were as good or better than the visitors. Next up we make the short trip to take on Duleek/Bellewstown on Saturday 26th April at 4.00pm.
