Tara Fay sets up an attack for O'Mahony's during the Division 1 FL clash with Simonstown

Navan O’Mahony’s 5-13 Simonstown Gaels 1-04

Navan O’Mahony’s got off to a winning start in their first Div 1 league match in several years on Friday evening in Simonstown. The opening round had been delayed the previous week due to the weather

O’Mahony’s had a number of shots in the first few minutes, but took a while to get into gear with the first two attempts wide of target. Órlaith Mallon pointed from play after five minutes. Midfielder Isabel Thorp won possession from the resulting kickout and found the net, giving O’Mahony’s an early hold on the game.

The hosts responded with a well-kicked pointed free but Lauren Woods extended the lead in the tenth minute with a goal.  A similar pattern followed, with Simonstown pointing and Woods getting a point this time round.

A ten minute spell passed, with a point from Simonstown the only score. O’Mahony’s pushed on in the final seven or eight minutes of the half, with Mallon kicking a goal from played and pointing two frees.  Woods split the posts from play with a minute remaining and Neasa McDermott raised a green flag on the cusp of half time.

Again, scoring was slow to start in the second half. Mallon once again opened from play and substitute Chloe Duffy extended her side’s lead quickly afterwards.

Mallon kicked two impressive points, followed by a well deserved point from Sarah Powderly after several gut-bursting runs up the pitch.

The remainder of the match followed a similar pattern. Woods and Mallon added to their earlier scores and Charlie Murray got her name on the score-sheet midway through the half.

Simonstown found the net in the eleventh minute as well as pointing in the twenty-third, the final score of the game. O’Mahony’s now go on to welcome St Colmcilles for round 2.
