Navan O’Mahony’s 5-11 Wolfe Tones 1-09

Navan O’Mahony’s secured their place in the semi final of the Premier 2 FC with a good win over Wolfe Tones. The game was played in perfect conditions in Simonstown on Saturday afternoon.

Within fifteen seconds of throw-in, O’Mahony’s had a temporary numerical advantage when a Wolfe Tones player was sent to the line on a black card. Within seven minutes O’Mahony’s had built up a five point lead with points from Shane McCarthy, Jack McConnell and a Thomas Cully goal.

Wolfe Tones first score of the game came in the form of an eighth minute free. Hugo Fitzherbert, fresh from his twenty-first birthday celebrations, found the net in the tenth minute as a result of a block from Craig Nolan and good play from Eoghan Nugent. 

Wolfe Tone’s responded with two points and eight minutes passed before Craig Munnelly O’Toole scored his first point of the game after a good pass from McConnell.  Five minutes passed scoreless until Wolfe Tones scored three points in ninety seconds, narrowing the gap.

This was nullified when O’Toole kicked two points, followed by a Christy Dillon goal to give O’Mahony’s the edge again. An injury time point from Wolfe Tones was the final score of the half.

Quick out of the blocks, Wolfe Tones narrowed the gap to five points once again with a goal within  thirty seconds of throw-in in the second half. Not to be outdone, O’Mahony’s won the resulting kickout and played the ball up the pitch for O’Toole to send to the net. 

O’Toole followed this with a point in the third minute. Only two scores came in the next ten minutes, both of which were for Wolfe Tones. With thirteen minutes on the clock, Cully added a point to his earlier goal.

A minute later, Dillon finished the game completely as a contest with his second goal. Any hopes of Wolfe Tones clawing the game back were denied by a good save by netminder Aaron Byrne and a goalmouth interception by Louis Collins. Points from Dillon and McConnell saw out the game and O’Mahony’s qualify for the semi-final.
