Blackhall Gaels Shane Whitty

Blackhall Gaels 2-19 Longwood 1-11

Blackhall made it two wins from two in the Senior Hurling Championship on Monday night when they powered past Longwood with a dominant performance in Kiltale. Championship Mondays are a rarity but when Saturday's fixture fell foul to the weather Monday was chosen as the only logical option ahead of a busy football schedule.

A fifteen minute spell in the second quarter of the game proved the difference as Blackhall hit 2 goals in that period. But It wasn't all one way traffic in the first half. When Longwood hit the net with the opening goal of the game in the 18th it put Longwood ahead by one and they had hit a number of wides. The goal sprung the Gaels into life however. Paul Kelly soon hit the leveller and Blackhall kicked on from there. Mark Mullally, who proved a handful all evening, put Johnny Meyler through on goal with a lovely delayed handpass and Meyler made no mistake on 22 minutes. On 29 minutes a long range sideline cut from Shane Whitty found its way to the net, whether it got a touch on the way remains a debate but Blackhall were now in a commanding 2-12 to 1-5 position. Dermot Carty finished off the scoring for the half with a wonderful point from play to leave 11 points between the sides at the break.

The second half was a closer affair with Longwood in search of a goal to narrow the gap but it didn't materialise. On the night Blackhall's full back line of Hugh Smith, Tom Delany and Colm Fitzgerald withstood tremendous pressure but were well on top.  At the other end John Kelly hit 3 second half points from play while Carty and Meyler further added to their already impressive accounts for the evening. In the end Blackhall had more around the field than Longwood but they will rue several missed chances as their wide count outweighed their scoring tally. For Blackhall it leaves them on 4 points from their two outings with Kilmessan to play in two weeks.
