Sligo moved into the knock-out stages of the Connacht U20 football championship after handing Leitrim a 5-17 to 2-22 defeat in Drumshanbo yesterday evening.
After the home side had goaled twice inside the opening seven minutes through Darren Cox and skipper Jack Foley, the holders would manage to overturn an eight-point deficit before half-time.
Back-to-back goals in the 25th minute via Connor Flynn and Tommy Ross saw Sligo hit the front and a couple of frees from captain Ronan Niland edged them towards a 2-12 to 2-9 half-time lead.
Daire Callaghan found the hosts’ net five minutes into the restart and the Yeats County hammered in two more majors through Flynn and Niland to cement their place in the knock-out stages.
In Tuam Stadium, Roscommon left themselves in the driving seat for a semi-final place in the western province after earning a 1-11 to 0-14 draw with Galway.
Galway registered their goal just 30 seconds into the contest via Mikey Mulryan but it was the Rossies who were the better team for large portions of the first-half to hold a 0-8 to 1-2 lead at the interval.
John Curran, Rory Carthy (free) and Conor Kelly all sent over points after the change of ends to add to the visitors’ lead, but Galway would trim their deficit to two before coming with a late push that saw Colm Costello’s two-pointer from a free salvaging the Tribesmen a draw. However, the result may not to be enough for Galway with just three points from their four games, as they'll need Leitrim to do them a favour away to Roscommon next Wednesday.
