It seems highly unlikely that the RTE Sport's website is now (5 days later) going to report on the damage to the dressingroom caused by the Australian rugby backroom team (or as the rugby reports might say the damage done 'when the body of an Australian came in contact with door of a dressingroom') This is the second serious omission in the last month. Remember the suspension of the Toulon player for kicking an Ulster player in the head that went unreported at the end of October. The evidence of a 'protectionist' policy in RTE Sport towards rugby is certainly beginning to mount.

Imagine what would be said by our "friends" in the print and broadcast media if €8,000 worth of damage was done to a dressing room in Croke Park by a football or hurling team that lost a high profile match . Did anyone see Cliona Foley's article on Eamon Fitzmaurice in yesterday's Independent ?

Yeah I read it. What about it?
Cliona Foley is a good GAA journalist.

6pm. Saturday. Two of the most important club football matches of the year are being played tomorrow, the Ulster and Munster club SFC Finals. Two provincial finals. That's something you won't know if you get your sports news from the RTE Sport website. Not a mention. No preview. No scene set. No nothing. Which is bizarre when you consider the coverage given to today's foreign rugby internationals and of course the all important Pro 12. There isn't a football follower anywhere in Ireland who won't be keeping at eye or an ear on both these games tomorrow. RTE continues to treat football followers, of whom there are more than of any other sport in Ireland, with utter contempt. And what's even worse no one in RTE seems to care?

You didn't pick up on the fact that she said "The GAA was left with egg on it's face" for appearing to ignore Eamon Fitzmaurice when it came to managing the 2014 All Stars when you read the article ? Further down the article we learn that Fitzmaurice confirmed that he had been asked by The GAA to manage The All Stars but couldn't because of work commitments. So where exactly does Foley justify her opening remarks in relation to The GAA having egg on it's face ? I agree that Cliona Foley is one of the top GAA journalists but that is not exactly a ringing endorsement now is it ?

Wrong joncarter. You are an apologist for shoddy, prejudiced journalism. Two questions for you. Firstly, was Eamon Fitzmaurice ignored by The GAA ? The fact that he supposedly was is the original premise of the article . Secondly was Cliona Foley justified in saying The GAA "had egg on it's face" ? Honest answers and no obfuscation please .

Eamonn Sweeney Sunday Independent 01/12/2014

Good behaviour comes at a price
Did you see where that soccer team caused €8,000 worth of damage to the dressing rooms at the Aviva? Disgraceful. But what would you expect from that game with its debased culture and lack of a moral compass? It's played by yobs and supported by hooligans after all. I hope the players involved are named, shamed and banned. You wouldn't get the likes of that in a civilised sportsmanlike game like . . .

Rugby? Did I hear you right? It was the Australian rugby team that caused that damage after being beaten by Ireland? Oh. Well, it's understandable for players to let off a bit of steam after a match. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation.

No need to make a big deal out of it. I mean, it's not as if there are rugby fans out there who like to seize upon lapses of sportsmanship in soccer and GAA so they can bang on about how they support a superior sport. That never happens at all.

Anyway, what about that soccer team who picked a guy last Saturday even though he'd been caught sending a pornographic text to a female member of staff and texting his team-mates, using the woman's name, to ask if they'd 'Like to have a go fucking this'. He wouldn't get away with that in . . .

Rugby? You're joking me? No? That was actually a rugby player, Kurtley Beale of Australia who played against Ireland despite suggestions last month that his contract with the national team was in jeopardy after his harassment of Australia's business manager Di Patston. "We are backing Kurtley, I enjoy having him around the team," said Australian captain Mike Hooper. I'm sure you do, Mike. Boys will be boys after all.

Of course Beale is a rugby international so his behaviour can't be compared with similar infractions by soccer players. There's obviously a huge difference.

You just need to have gone to a fee-paying school to know what it is.

Sweeney hit the nail of the head with that article. Ormond your idea that Munster or Leinster fans are sitting on the edge of there seats waiting for Connacht results is ridiculous, there are 14 matches left in the season and of course with Munster and Leinster keeping stealing Coonachts best players the will ensure that the keep ahead of Connacht

The decision by the RTE Sort website not to preview the Ulster Club SFC Final looks all the more strange when you consider that almost 10,000 spectators turned up for the game. Surely any event that attracts that number of people deserves proper coverage. And that's the actual attendance I'm talking about not the theoretical attendance which is what rugby and soccer clubs are now using. They've begun including season tickets holders whether they are there are not as part of the announced attendance. So an attendance figure of 17,000 for in a game in Thomond Park might actually only be 12 ,000. It's a way of massaging attendance figures to make a sport look better but it's hardly a moral approach?

Parts of that Sweeney article are true but others laughable. He has form in knocking rugby. He has something against the sport..

Look at most forums and you will see most provincial fans looking out for Connacht's results considering its a 12 team league and odds on the Connacht result will impact the provinces in one form or another
Which of Connachts players have been stolen by Munster and Leinster?
You do know that most of the guys who did go to Munster and Leinster in recent times from Connacht are not actually from Connacht and originally are Munster/Leinster players.

Why don't you contact RTE?
A large percentage of sports include season ticket holders and doing it isn't immoral and they state tickets sold not the actual attendance. Nothing wrong with that

I agree with you Ormond that sweeney can be a bit of an eejit at times, but his point about attitudes to rugby is valid imo, even if it was presented in a silly way.

you may disagree with sweeney but lot of what he says is true...its not necessarily rugby he is anti..its some of the people in it and the values they try to portray which irks many people and how the negative side is ignored
